Prayer

January 18, 2009
Inauguration of the President of the United States

Almighty God, we humbly beseech you that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitude brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endow with your spirit of wisdom those to whom we entrust the authority of government, that through their actions there may be justice and peace in our homes, in our country, and in our world—the home of all your children. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(Adapted from “A Prayer for the Nation” by Thomas Jefferson, 1801) --  The Reverend Dr. L. Wayne Bryan, Executive Minister, retired, South Carolina Christian Action Council
