January
11, 2007: EXPRESSIONS OF FAITH IN PUBLIC PLACES: Go-Gos and No-
Nos. First in a series of discussions on opportunities and
challenges in public expressions of faith for people of all faiths.
5:30-6:30.
First session: Muslim Prayers in Public Places. Recently
Muslim travelers who as a group in an airport said 'Evening Prayers'
(Sunset Prayers) were removed from their plane and questioned for hours
because of this "suspicious activity." In contrast, if all
Christian groups who gathered for prayer before or after travel were
detained, the travel industry would be crippled!
Host
and co-sponsor: Greater Columbia Community Relations Council. Location:
Palmetto Room, Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Richland St. Other
co-sponsors: CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) and the South
Carolina Christian Action.
Janaury
25, 2007: Richland County 2007 Homeless Count.
Communities across South Carolina will be conducting a count on the night
of January 25. 2007.
How YOU
can help in Columbia (for other communities contact your community
leaders). Volunteers to walk around the city and locate and count any unsheltered
homeless people. All volunteers will receive specific training on how to
do the Count. Volunteers will travel in teams, led by an individual with
specific experience working with homeless persons, and move around
specific areas in the city on foot. The teams will have items to
distribute. Volunteering with the count is a great way to help the
community improve its ability to understand and address the needs of
homeless people. It will also provide a unique perspective about the
issue of homelessness in our city. If you are interested in volunteering,
February
16-17, 2007. Capacity Building Leadership Institute.
Health ministry training offered to African American churches of all
denominations. Additional information will be provided with registration
form that will be sent out in early January.

more information contact: Joyce B. Winkler, RN, MPH, Faith and Health
Consultant, SC DHEC Office of Minority Health (803) 898-7655.

IMMIGRATION

immigration
I_M_M_I_G_R_A_T_I_O_N
For me
that word conjures images of human movement from one place to another;
human movement from want and despair toward hope and future. I see the
grainy images from the Grapes of Wrath.
Movement
is inherent in immigration. What is gained by such moving? What is lost?
What creates the need for such upheaval? And for many, willingness to
face such peril?
What is
government's response to be? Closed gates, controlled access, open doors?
"...Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning
to be free...."
What is
faith's response to be? My security versus your future? "...Consider
the stranger, for some have entertained angels unaware...."
We're
going talk about it. Why don't you join us?
Registration
of $15 includes box lunch and is due by February 6, 2007. At the door,
pay just $10--no lunch or guarantee of materials.
